Class teacher: Mrs Onions A bit about the class: In Year 6, we recognise that pupils learn best when they are engaged, challenged and actively involved in their learning. Our lessons are carefully structured to include a balance of teacher-led instruction and opportunities for pupils to apply their knowledge through meaningful, independent and collaborative activities. We encourage children to think deeply, take ownership of their learning and practise key skills in a variety of contexts.
In Year 6, each day begins with a maths morning starter to build fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. After this, pupils take part in Pathways to Write, where they explore engaging texts that inspire their writing. They learn how to analyse language and structure, before planning, drafting and editing their own work.
Maths lessons start with a short arithmetic or retrieval activity to revisit key skills. Teachers then introduce new learning, followed by guided practice. Pupils move on to independent and challenge tasks, where they apply their knowledge. We encourage children to explain their thinking clearly and to show resilience when solving more difficult problems.
In Guided Reading, pupils develop their understanding using high-quality texts. Using John Murray’s reading explorers strategies, we teach skills such as predicting, questioning, clarifying, summarising and making connections. Lessons include shared reading, teacher modelling and group discussion. Pupils are encouraged to use evidence from the text to explain their ideas and think carefully about what they read.
Across the day, learning is structured to ensure pupils are both supported and challenged, with opportunities to consolidate and apply their skills independently and collaboratively.
Afternoon Discoveries: Our afternoons are filled with enriching activities that span the wider curriculum, igniting a passion for learning beyond the basics.
Throughout the week, the children take part in assemblies that help to promote our school values of honesty, kindness, curiosity, respect and always trying our best. We also learn about British Values and how to be respectful, responsible members of our community. Throughout the year, visitors come into school to lead special sessions, sharing valuable experiences, knowledge and important messages with the children.
At Grange Primary School, we are very proud of the strong links we have within our local community. Throughout the school year, the children take part in a range of opportunities that help them to learn about our school values and the importance of being positive, respectful members of society.
We work closely with our local police team and enjoy regular visits from Reverend Lisa Knight, who leads assemblies and supports the children’s understanding of community and belonging. Our school choir also enjoys performing within the local community, including visits to care homes and performances for shoppers during special events.
During Careers Week, a variety of visitors come into school to lead engaging practical sessions, inspiring the children and helping them to learn about different careers and future opportunities.
During social times, children are encouraged to take part in a range of organised activities that are planned through a timetable across the week. These activities help to promote teamwork, sharing and taking turns, whilst allowing children to socialise and have fun with their friends. Children also have access to outdoor equipment to keep active and engaged during playtimes. In addition, children can visit Pip’s Corner, a calm indoor space where they have the opportunity to read, colour, construct and relax with their peers in a welcoming environment.
In year 6 trips and residential visits play a valuable role in enriching pupils’ learning beyond the classroom. They provide real-world experiences that bring learning to life, deepen understanding and spark curiosity. In addition, these opportunities help pupils develop important life skills such as independence, resilience and confidence. By working together in new environments, pupils strengthen their teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills, as well as their ability to collaborate and support one another.
