Class teachers and TAs: The class teacher is Mr. Gregory A bit about the class: Squirrel Class is a welcoming and engaging environment where children are encouraged to enjoy learning and challenge themselves. We provide a variety of opportunities for pupils to work together, think independently and express their ideas creatively. Across the year, children explore a range of exciting topics through practical, hands-on activities that make learning meaningful and memorable. We also support children’s social and emotional development, helping them to grow in confidence and resilience.
Each morning, children begin with short tasks in their morning books to revisit and consolidate prior learning. We then move into Guided Reading and English lessons, using high-quality texts to support reading and writing skills. Regular brain breaks are included to help pupils stay focused.
After morning break, children take part in Maths lessons using the CanDo Maths scheme, where they develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills while explaining their thinking using key vocabulary. Our afternoons are filled with exciting wider curriculum lessons such as Science, History, Geography, Art, PE, Computing, and Music. Children enjoy practical activities, teamwork, and creative learning opportunities that help bring learning to life.
Throughout the week, the children take part in assemblies that help to promote our school values of honesty, kindness, curiosity, respect and always trying our best. We also learn about British Values and how to be respectful, responsible members of our community. Throughout the year, visitors come into school to lead special sessions, sharing valuable experiences, knowledge and important messages with the children.
In Year 3/4, we follow the Reading Explorers scheme during guided reading sessions to develop the children’s comprehension, vocabulary and reading fluency skills. Each week, we explore a new text, exposing the children to a wide range of genres, authors and writing styles throughout the year. Through discussion and carefully planned activities, the children learn how to analyse texts thoroughly, understand key themes and use evidence from the text to support their ideas. Our guided reading lessons help to build confident, thoughtful and enthusiastic readers.
Each half term, we focus on a new text from the Pathways to Write scheme, exposing the children to a wide range of high-quality books and different writing styles. Through these engaging texts, the children develop their writing skills in Year 3/4 by exploring vocabulary, grammar and a variety of genres, alongside taking part in creative and purposeful writing activities.
In Year 3/4, we follow the Can Do Maths scheme to help develop confidence, resilience and a positive attitude towards mathematics. Our lessons encourage children to think deeply, explain their reasoning and apply their knowledge to a range of mathematical concepts. Where possible, we use practical resources and hands-on activities to support learning, helping children to visualise problems and build a secure understanding. Through engaging and challenging lessons, we encourage all children to develop their fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills in a fun and supportive environment.
At Grange Primary School, we are very proud of the strong links we have within our local community. Throughout the school year, the children take part in a range of opportunities that help them to learn about our school values and the importance of being positive, respectful members of society.
We work closely with our local police team and enjoy regular visits from Reverend Lisa Knight, who leads assemblies and supports the children’s understanding of community and belonging. Our school choir also enjoys performing within the local community, including visits to care homes and performances for shoppers during special events.
During Careers Week, a variety of visitors come into school to lead engaging practical sessions, inspiring the children and helping them to learn about different careers and future opportunities.
At social times, children are encouraged to take part in a range of organised activities that are planned through a timetable across the week. These activities help to promote teamwork, sharing and taking turns, whilst allowing children to socialise and have fun with their friends. Children also have access to outdoor equipment to keep active and engaged during playtimes. In addition, children can visit Pip’s Corner, a calm indoor space where they have the opportunity to read, colour, construct and relax with their peers in a welcoming environment.
