Welcome to Caterpillar Class

The Class Teacher is Miss Winstanley. We are supported by Mrs Harte and Mrs Chadwick. In Caterpillar Class, we recognise that children learn best through hands-on exploration and practical experiences. Our approach balances both adult-led and child-led learning, allowing each session to provide opportunities for children to apply and extend their understanding in a variety of ways, including partner talk, group discussion, and the use of engaging, tangible resources.

We are committed to supporting every child to achieve their full potential and flourish. Through carefully planned teaching, responsive support, and high expectations, we nurture individual strengths and interests while providing appropriate challenge. We create a safe and encouraging environment where children feel confident to take risks, persevere, and celebrate their achievements. In Caterpillar Class, we also place great importance on building strong friendships. We encourage children to look out for one another, show kindness, and respect each other’s thoughts and feelings, helping to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment where everyone can thrive.

How the day runs:

Every morning, we begin our day with calming activities that develop literacy, maths, and fine motor skills, such as letter and number formation, threading, or construction. Gentle music is played to help the children to settle as we greet one another before reviewing our visual timetable and starting the day with Phonics, where we follow Read Write Inc.

The morning continues with Writing and Maths learning. In Writing, we follow Pathway to Write, where we investigate a new engaging, high-quality text each half term. This scheme provides structured progression and lovely opportunities for children to discuss books and language, build their confidence and creativity, and develop their independence as writers. In Maths, we follow Can Do Maths where children learn in small manageable steps, focusing on building strong mathematical foundational skills and confidence.

Once a week, the children also take part in Forest school. Forest school allows the children to explore, grow in confidence, resilience, and independence while developing key skills through meaningful outdoor experiences—supporting them to flourish beyond the classroom.

Throughout the week, the children take part in assemblies that help to promote our school values of honesty, kindness, curiosity, respect and always trying our best. We also learn about British Values and how to be respectful, responsible members of our community. Throughout the year, visitors come into school to lead special sessions, sharing valuable experiences, knowledge and important messages with the children.

After lunchtime, children are welcomed and settled into the classroom with calming music. We then revisit our visual timetable to look at the afternoon’s learning. In the afternoon, the pupil’s benefit from a rich and varied curriculum that emphasises hands‑on, practical learning. Foundation subjects are taught through an enriching, experiential approach that encourages curiosity, creativity and critical thinking. These opportunities allow children to span the wider curriculum, igniting a passion for learning beyond the basics, and helping them make meaningful connections across subjects.

Children are given regular opportunities to access Continuous Provision in Caterpillars. Through choosing activities, the children are able to explore, investigate ideas that spark their interests, build their confidence and independently develop and deepen their learning.

At social times, children are encouraged to take part in a range of organised activities that are planned through a timetable across the week. These activities help to promote teamwork, sharing and taking turns, whilst allowing children to socialise and have fun with their friends. Children also have access to outdoor equipment to keep active and engaged during playtimes. In addition, children can visit Pip’s Corner, a calm indoor space where they have the opportunity to read, colour, construct and relax with their peers in a welcoming environment.

At Grange Primary School, we are very proud of the strong links we have within our local community. Throughout the school year, the children take part in a range of opportunities that help them to learn about our school values and the importance of being positive, respectful members of society.

We work closely with our local police team and enjoy regular visits from Reverend Lisa Knight, who leads assemblies and supports the children’s understanding of community and belonging. Our school choir also enjoys performing within the local community, including visits to care homes and performances for shoppers during special events. During Careers Week, a variety of visitors also come into school to lead engaging practical sessions, inspiring the children and helping them to learn about different careers and future opportunities.
